History of Grama Panchayat
Pooyappally Grama Panchayat is a region spread across 22.28 square kilometres in Kottarakkara Taluk and under the Kottarakkara Block Panchayat of Kollam district. Although there are no clear historical records regarding the origin of the name “Pooyappally,” local belief associates it with Buddhism. The word “Pally” traditionally refers to a Buddhist monastery, school, or writing centre, leading to the assumption that Buddhism once had a strong influence in Pooyappally and Maruthamonpally.
