Panchayat

A Panchayat is a body of elected representatives of the people to administer the affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. In the case of a Gram Panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of a Panchayat are: President: He is the head of the Panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat. Vice President: He assumes the responsibilities in the absence of the President. Ward Members: Representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat. Standing Committees: These are sub-committees formed to facilitate decision-making, such as finance, development, welfare, health, education, etc.

History of Grama Panchayat

Pooyappally Grama Panchayat is a region spread across 22.28 square kilometres in Kottarakkara Taluk and under the Kottarakkara Block Panchayat of Kollam district. Although there are no clear historical records regarding the origin of the name “Pooyappally,” local belief associates it with Buddhism. The word “Pally” traditionally refers to a Buddhist monastery, school, or writing centre, leading to the assumption that Buddhism once had a strong influence in Pooyappally and Maruthamonpally. It is also believed that Buddhist followers conducted educational activities on the days of the Pooyam star, and that the place name may have originated from this tradition
